Military Order of the Cootie

The Military Order of the Cootie (MOC) is recognized as the "Honor Degree of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.” Organized in 1920, the MOC brings together dedicated VFW members who have demonstrated their commitment to serving veterans, their communities and the VFW.

Although the organization is known for its unusual traditions, distinctive red headgear and lighthearted sense of humor, its mission is deeply serious: supporting hospitalized veterans and bringing companionship, encouragement and laughter to those facing illness or extended medical care.

Keep ’Em Smilin’ in Beds of White

Hospital visitation is at the heart of the Military Order of the Cootie. Guided by the expression "Keep ’Em Smilin’ in Beds of White,” Cooties visit and support veterans in Department of Veterans Affairs facilities, hospitals, nursing homes and other care settings.

Through personal visits, volunteer service, entertainment and other acts of kindness, members help ensure that hospitalized and recovering veterans know they remain remembered and appreciated.

The Honor Degree of the VFW

Membership in the Military Order of the Cootie is reserved for eligible VFW members who have demonstrated service and dedication within the Veterans of Foreign Wars. As members of the VFW’s Honor Degree, Cooties are expected to lead by example and remain active in support of their Posts, Districts, Departments and the national organization.

Cooties fulfill these responsibilities with integrity, loyalty and perseverance while continuing the fellowship and camaraderie shared among veterans. Their work reflects a simple principle:

Anything worth doing is worth doing right.

The MOC motto—"Honor, Loyalty, Perseverance and Industry”—expresses the values its members bring to their service. Through faithful support of the VFW and compassionate service to fellow veterans, the Military Order of the Cootie continues proving that meaningful work and good-natured fun can go hand in hand.
