Veterans Crisis Line

If you are in immediate danger, call 911.

If you are a veteran in crisis, having thoughts of suicide or concerned about a veteran, the Veterans Crisis Line provides free, confidential support 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You do not need to be enrolled in VA health care or benefits to contact the Crisis Line.

Your life matters. Please make the call, send the text or start the chat.

Buddy-to-Buddy Veteran Support

Sometimes the first person a veteran needs is another veteran who understands military service, separation and the challenges that may follow.

Post 8905’s Buddy-to-Buddy outreach is intended to help veterans connect with fellow veterans for conversation, encouragement and assistance locating appropriate resources. Our members can listen without judgment and help remind veterans that they remain part of a community that cares about them.

Peer support is not a replacement for professional mental-health treatment or emergency assistance. Anyone experiencing a crisis should contact the Veterans Crisis Line by calling 988 and pressing 1.

PTSD, Readjustment and Counseling Support

Military service and traumatic experiences can affect veterans in many different ways. Persistent anxiety, anger, isolation, depression, sleep problems, painful memories or a constant sense of danger may indicate that additional support would be helpful.

VA Vet Centers provide eligible veterans, service members and their families with confidential counseling at no cost in a welcoming, non-medical setting. Services may include individual, group, marriage and family counseling; bereavement counseling; military sexual trauma counseling; and assistance connecting with additional VA or community resources.

VA Benefits and Claims Assistance

Veterans, transitioning service members, eligible family members and survivors can receive free assistance from a VFW-accredited service officer. Accredited representatives can help explain VA benefits, prepare and submit claims, gather supporting evidence and assist with appeals.

VFW claims assistance is provided at no cost. There are no fees, percentages or contracts.

Housing and Homelessness Assistance

Veterans who are homeless, facing eviction or at risk of losing stable housing can contact the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans. Assistance is free, confidential and available 24 hours a day.

Texas residents can also dial 2-1-1 for help locating community resources involving housing, food, utility assistance, health care, transportation, mental-health care and substance-use treatment.

Financial Assistance for Military Families

The VFW Unmet Needs program provides qualifying active-duty service members, including activated members of the National Guard and Reserve, and their families with financial assistance resulting from deployment, military-related activity or injury.

Assistance is provided as a grant rather than a loan and may help with eligible necessities such as housing, utilities, vehicle expenses, food and other essential needs.

Support for Veteran Caregivers

Family members and friends who care for veterans may also need information, encouragement and support. The VA Caregiver Support Line provides information about caregiver services, counseling, education and connections to local VA caregiver-support teams.

Resources for Women Veterans

The Women Veterans Call Center helps women veterans and their families find information about VA health care, benefits and services. Representatives can answer questions and connect callers with appropriate resources in their communities.

Reach Out to Post 8905
